💥 Big News

Google's powerful AI video generation just got more accessible →

Google has introduced Veo 3.1 Lite, its most cost-effective AI video generation model yet, giving developers a cheaper way to build high-volume video applications through the Gemini API. It comes in at less than half the cost of Veo 3.1 Fast while keeping the same generation speed.

The model supports both text-to-video and image-to-video, along with landscape and portrait formats, 720p and 1080p resolution options, and flexible video lengths of 4, 6, or 8 seconds. That gives builders more room to balance quality, format, and cost depending on the product they are creating.

It is rolling out now through the paid tier of the Gemini API and Google AI Studio, with a price reduction for Veo 3.1 Fast also coming on April 7.

Why it matters:

  • Lower-cost access to AI video generation.
  • Built for higher-volume developer use cases.
  • Available now in Gemini API and AI Studio.

Claude Code introduces 'Auto mode' for safer coding →

Claude has introduced Auto mode for Claude Code, a new permissions setting that lets Claude make more decisions on its own so developers can run longer tasks with fewer manual interruptions. It is designed to be a safer option for hands-off coding than constantly approving every step.

Instead of prompting for every file write or bash command, Auto mode uses safeguards that review each action before it runs. Safe actions move forward automatically, while potentially risky behavior like destructive file changes, data exfiltration, or suspicious code execution can be blocked or redirected.

It is a more practical middle ground than using dangerously-skip-permissions, though Anthropic still recommends isolated environments since some risky actions may still get through and some safe ones may be blocked. It is available now in research preview for Team users.

Why it matters:

  • Fewer permission prompts during longer coding tasks.
  • Safety checks review actions before they run.
  • A safer alternative to skipping permissions entirely.

⏭️ What's Next

This week felt like a good reminder of where AI is heading next: lower costs, less friction, and more practical ways to get real work done. Google is making video generation easier to build with, Claude is reducing the stop-and-start nature of coding with AI, and the rest of this issue points to a broader shift toward tools that save time without adding complexity. That is the kind of progress worth watching.
